Ok, so I am seriously thinking about moving out into my first house. However, if this happens I would like a dog. My partner works weird hours and I would be left home alone a lot, and don’t really want that. I would like a dog for company and for protection.
I would like a LARGE dog. A dog that someone would look at and think twice about jumping the fence- I DON’T want a dog that is aggressive, too hard for me to handle, or will go for other animals. I have two cats and they will need to get along. It needs to be a dog that responds well and is easy to train. I want to walk my dog, not it walk me.
I don’t mind lots hair or drool and am willing to brush my dog a couple times a week. I have lived with dogs before- My dad was already the owner of a male Dane and Maltese when I was born (Yup, I’m sure we often had drooling contests). At the moment we have a Cavalier- but I won’t take him with me when I move as he is more a “family” dog.
I was thinking maybe a Great Dane, Landseer Newfoundland or maybe something like a Leonberger. But still have serious doubts. There are huge pro’s and cons for all of these dogs.
Money isn’t a HUGE issue, but as I will be living in my first home I would like less the cost the better. A dog with less health issues is preferred – Vet bills are overwhelming these days!
What do you guys think?
EDIT: Also, the dog will probably be rarely left home alone. I work during the day, while my partner usually works night-shifts.
Ramez A & J — Honestly, I have never considered a Lab, but my partner has. You never know. ;D
Princess — I don’t really want and agressive dog at all. Just a big dog to scare off the bad peoples. XD
HollyMarie — I too know the crazy-ness of a husky. And I actually like the longhaired German Shepherds, or better yet King Shepherds! ^.^
