Buy from a good, reputable breeder who is only breeding champion dogs, and ensure you obtain, or at least view, AKC, C(anadian)KC or KC registration papers for the parents and the litter before making the purchase. Question the breeder extensively about their dogs and their titles – all good breeders will be delighted at your interest.
The American Miniature Schnauzer Club (http://amsc.us/ ) can provide contact details and references for good breeders, and also help you to locate breed rescues in your area. The Club can also help you research and learn more about the breed and its’ needs, and advise you of what to look for when choosing a pup.
Becoming familiar with breed standard may also be of use – kennel club registrations might mean a dog is a purebred, but they don’t mean it’s a good example of its breed or that it’s been well-bred. A full white Miniature Schnauzer can still be a purebred, and a fantastic pet, but it doesn’t meet breed standard.
