I have a 1-year old miniature dachshund. I’ve been trying to teach him to fetch, and he is great at getting the ball- just not bringing it back and giving it up to me. How can I get him to do this every time? I tried using treats, but when he knows I have the treats by me, he wont even go chase the ball.

my dog did the same thing, i then started associating the game fetch with a treat. i would get a ball- placic ball with holes in it, like a wiffle ball- and i’d put a treat in it, when i threw it he would chase it and get it for the treat. after he got the ball i would hold a treat in my hand and call him back, usually when he saw the treat he’d come right back. so after you do this for a week or so he should learn the game of fetch :D
Hope This Helps! :D

Ha! I have a 6 year old miniature dachshund who still acts like a puppy. Dachshunds are very smart dogs and learn tricks surprisingly well and fast, but I’m afraid fetch is not one of their many talents.
I have found they LOVE to play keep-away and tug-a-war. You may just try a new trick, lol, but if you are absolutely set on teaching him to fetch, I would starting by puting treats in your pocket or somewhere your dog can’t see them, and throwing the toy just a couple feet away to where you can reach it. When your dog picks it up, encourage him to give you the ball, or else just take it from him. Then give him a treat for bringing to you. Do this until he understands that bringing back the toy gets him a treat, and then gradually throw the ball farther and further.
