It would be a shame to lose such marvelous animals as Azawakhs, Thai Ridge backs and Peruvian Inca Orchid(among others). What can be done to save them? Is anybody doing anything about this?

There should be public awareness among the peoples and government should provide a good rescue teams for the farewell of extinct animals

I agree, it would a shame to lose such breeds. As of now, Most breeders are from the breeds native countries, and even then their are very few of them left. There are a few reputable breeders bringing over dogs of those breeds from Europe, starting breed clubs, getting the dogs more recognized and breeding occasionally to bring new pups that match the standard into the world. That’s the biggest thing that can be done.

by breeding them often

Most have breed societies, generally breeds that previously became almost extinct (like the Rottweiler at one point, seems hard to believe) were revamped by a few enthusiastic breeders. Public awareness of why the breeds make good pets or working animals can really help, some people love having an unusual dog.

Stop charging $ 3000 a go for the puppies would be a good first step.

Wow, you know all sorts of rare breeds. Why not begin a breeding program for them? Good luck to you..

I would say that it would be a shame, but there’s tons of dogs out there anyway, so i’m not really bothered. Though i get the dreaded feeling that in the year 2050, all that will be available to buy are Chorkies, Shipoms and Puggles..!!

Why? Dogs are not an endangered species. If enough people are interested in those particular breeds, then those people can ensure that they continue to be bred. If there aren’t enough interested people, then those breeds should fall by the wayside like several other breeds have.

The questioner, with all due respect, is apparently misinformed about what a “breed” is. And the amount of misinformation posted as answers here takes the breath away. Comparing the threatened loss of a silly breed of dog to a threatened species (and indeed, threatened GENUS as with the giant panda) reminds me of why the USA is so far behind in science education! Anyone who is promoting “purer” breeding as a means to preserving a breed knows nothing about genetics. Outside genes must be introduced in a controlled way if you want to keep a healthy breed.
Breeds are merely collections of phenotypal characteristics. All the trademark breed-specific phenotypal characteristics can be and are manipulated widely by humans and sometimes by nature. But a breed, per se, cannot go extinct! A species can.
There are breed-specific organizations and commercial ventures with vested interests who seek to create, maintain, and control breeds. But it’s species of canids other than domestic dogs that truly need our help. You can create a new “breed” almost instantly by simply combining dogs from divergent breeds. It’s all the organizational BS that makes a breed “official.” None the dogs you mention above mutated in nature without human intervention. As we commonly talk about them, breeds are more cultural phenomena than scientific facts, though there is of course a huge genetic aspect to breeding.
There ARE some canid species in the world that are very much endangered. I wish people would worry more about other canids, such as African wild dogs. The species Canis lupus familiaris (or domestic dog) gets all the attention.

Stop cross breeding mutts. If you have the time to care for and breed please choose only well breed registered animals It just takes some time and patience on the internet to find and arrange for these animals. We saved whales, and Pandas and we are now working for polar bears The Havanese are on their way. There is some people breeding the Inca Orchid. How often do you see poorly bred Chihuahuas bred with any thing. This fine old breed needs care as well.
